Elisha and Michael Feng (@fieldgemsphotography) share their minimal, mid-century modern Detroit home with us. We love their bright, botanical, retro home that is obviously filled with love—and plants.

Tell us a little about yourself and who you share your home with.

Hey hey! We’re Elisha and Mike, long-time college friends who dated long distance and ended up in Detroit together happily married now for almost 4 years. We are wedding and portrait photographers and LOVE our city, neighborhood, and church community. We often have people staying with us, but at the moment, it’s just us and our dog, Bacon 🙂

What is your day to day like?

I’d like to say that on the daily, we’re doing all sorts of cool and interesting things but honestly, a lot of our time is spent either at school (Mike just went back to school for his Doctorate in Physical Therapy) or in our home office pouring into our photography business. It’s definitely a labor of love. When we do get some free time, we love spending time with neighbors on the porch, riding our bikes around the city, rock climbing (Elisha), tending to our veggie garden, and playing soccer (Mike).

Tell us about your home.

Our home is a small two-story home built in 1913 that we purchased in 2015. Our favorite thing about it is that it has tons of natural light (yay for our plant babies!). The previous owner recently remodeled it and removed the original charm and character, but it dons white trim and cream-colored walls that serve perfectly for accenting the space with our own touch — natural wood, plants, pictures, and our mid-century modern furniture that we inherited from Elisha’s grandma.

How would you describe your style?

Honestly, we’d make this place a jungle if we could. We love bringing the outside in as much as we can. If space allowed, we’d have a hammock in our living room for sure. It took 3+ years to realize what our style actually is. It wasn’t until we took an interior design quiz that helped us see that we’re a mix of minimalist, mid-century modern, retro, Scandinavian, and bohemian.

Tell us about your favorite room.

Our favorite room is our living room. We’ve tried to make it really calming and welcoming. We’ve had great conversations with friends sitting around the room, intense board games on the carpet, restful moments praying or napping on our cozy couch, and some intense karaoke sessions by our piano.

How many houseplants do you have?

33 and would NOT mind having more 🙂

Why do you like having plants in your home?

Plants for us aren’t just pretty (but boy, are they pretty) and don’t just help us with the house cleaning (they take care of the cleaning air chore), but also honestly, they remind us of the deeper and more meaningful things in life. They remind us that life is seasonal and that there’s a time and place for everything. Also…seeing plants grow and develop reminds me, Elisha, a struggling perfectionist, that progress is totally fine and good. I can be content in the present and in the process.

What’s your favorite plant and why?

We’re right there with everyone else who considers themselves plant parents—we love them all!! But unlike actual human parents, we do have favorites…haha. Mike loves our new bushy one from Bloomscape (the Dracaena) and our ZZ Plants and I love the trailing guys (pothos and inch plants).

What tips do you have for decorating with plants?

Don’t worry about matching the plants with one another. Most of them look really great together, especially as you begin collecting more! And if plants make you happy, place them where you have to do something unmotivating like…the dishes 😉
