Plant Life Series: A Minimal Rustic Family Home in Minnesota
At Bloomscape, we’re here to help you strengthen your relationship with plants—it’s all part of our mission to bring gezellig to the world. And we love seeing how real-life families live with plants in their home. In our Plant Life Series, we’ll be taking a peek inside inspiring, plant-loving homes from around the country.
Angela Mueller (@restoring_home), a stay-at-home mom of four, graciously shared her gorgeous 1970’s minimal rustic home in Minnesota. We love her balanced, inviting style and her thoughtful use of plants throughout, and think you will too.
1. Tell us a little about yourself and who you share your home with.
I am a stay at home mom and we have 4 children, a dog, and a turtle. I’m a total homebody and am content to not leave the house most days. I love a good cup of coffee and a good workout.
2. What is your day-to-day like?
A typical day involves homeschooling and household chores. We have homeschool co-op or help out with childcare at our church a couple days a week also. In our free time, we love to play games, hang out in the backyard, and listen to music.
3. Tell us about your home.
Our home was built in 1972 and has some fun features like a brick wall in the living room, vaulted ceilings, and a unique layout.
4. What inspires you and how does your home reflect that?
I’m always inspired by nature—it’s beautiful all on its own and serves so many purposes, from cleaning the air to food and medicinal uses. Our home backs up to woods, so we have a beautiful view and can explore during the warmer months. I also incorporate as many plants and herbs into our home as I can, to bring the outdoors in.
5. Tell us about your favorite room.
My favorite room is our sunroom. We are just now getting around to furnishing it, but it’s always been my favorite space. It is mostly windows and looks out into the backyard, so I can read a book or just relax and still see the kids playing in the yard.
6. How many houseplants do you have?
We currently have about 33 houseplants and are adding more all the time!
7. Why do you like having plants in your home?
I love having plants in our home because they add color and life to any room, and I also love that help clean the air, which is something that’s important to us.
8. What’s your favorite plant and why?
I’m not sure that I have a favorite plant! I do have a soft spot for snake plants thought because it was the first plant I bought that I could keep alive and helped build my confidence to buy more plants.
9. What tips do you have for decorating with plants?
Some plants, like snake plants, do well with little light. Those are great options for rooms that don’t have a lot of natural light. You can use thrifted dishes or other objects instead of a basic saucer or stand to make it a little more unique. And don’t be afraid to hand your plants from the ceiling or put them on the wall! My wall planters are some of my favorite decor.
