Plant Life Series: A Modern Bohemian Home in Arizona
At Bloomscape, we’re here to help you strengthen your relationship with plants—it’s all part of our mission to bring gezellig to the world. And we love seeing how real-life families live with plants in their home. In our Plant Life Series, we’ll be taking a peek inside inspiring, plant-loving homes from around the country.
Esperanza Lorena (@theurbandarling), a lifestyle blogger and content creator invites us into her new Phoenix home that fully embraces bohemian modern decor. With a background in interior design and a love for Spanish-inspired decor, Esperanza has crafted a home that reflects her passions and heritage, all while embracing her growing family and, of course, her love for plants.
Tell us a little about yourself and who you share your home with.
I’m Esperanza, a Phoenix based lifestyle blogger and content creator which I have been doing for the past 8 years, but my background is in interior design! I am a mom to a 9 month old baby boy, my son Sage Wylder. We moved into a rental house with my boyfriend and his dog Arlo, a Portuguese Water Dog, a little over a month ago. He is a chef and food consultant. We both share a passion for food, styling, music, and hosting, which we plan on doing more of!
Tell us a about your home.
Our new rental home was remodeled in a neutral modern style by the owner in 2020, who did a great job on it. It took us several weeks of touring homes and not finding anything, but once we saw this house, we knew it was perfect for us. We absolutely love it!
How do you describe your style?
I would describe my style as modern bohemian. I love natural decor pieces, Spanish style, vintage finds, and mostly neutrals with hints of bold terracotta and green. Our home is a mix of all of those elements. My mother is from Colombia, so I have a lot of heritage pieces from there that I have taken with me on every move over the years. I would definitely say that’s where I get my love of Spanish style! Andrew and I also love thrifting, so we have found a lot of really cool pieces that way.
What inspires you and how does your home reflect that?
From day one, we have been decorating our home together! Andrew moved down here from Portland, OR, with only what he could fit in his car, and I had previously been living with my parents for a year, so I didn’t have a ton of furniture either. We both love decorating, so we were super excited to make this house feel like home together! We are inspired by travel, music, the outdoors, craftsmanship, and more. I would definitely say our home reflects that.
What is your favorite room and why?
The house has an open concept kitchen, living, and dining area where we spend most of our time, so I would say that is my favorite room! I thrifted 3 canvas prints of a desert scene that make an amazing focal piece on the dining room wall. The track lights above really highlight the piece in the evening. There is also an amazing console table that we recently thrifted with a cholla cactus skeleton as the centerpiece that we found on a hike. It’s a mix of all the elements I like and I love the desert vibes!
How many houseplants do you have?
When we first moved in, we only had 4, but we have slowly grown our collection to 14 houseplants! Both Andrew and I love plants and had big collections that we had to leave behind, so we are excited to keep adding more. We have even started propagating a few plant babies as well!
Why do you like having plants in your home?
Plants add so much life to the home, visually and physically. There are so many added benefits to having plants in the home like improved air quality, better mental health, and reduced stress. They are definitely a must for both Andrew and I!
What is your favorite plant and why?
My favorite plant is our Bloomscape Dracaena tree that we styled next to our console table, right by the sliding door that leads to our patio where it gets plenty of light! I just love the way it looks and the tropical feel of it. A close second would be our Bloomscape Fiddle Leaf Fig tree that looks amazing in the corner of our living room!
What tips do you have for decorating with plants?
I love styling with plants; they make amazing focal points! I would say scale is important depending on where it’s going, and I like mixing different sizes and types of plants like trees, hanging plants, variegated plants, etc. I love a hanging plant in the corner of a room or a tall tree that makes a statement!
