Euonymus Care

Euonymus Plant care is relatively simple. Its resistance to dry periods and hardiness are two reasons why Euonymus is one of the easiest plants to care for. This type of greenery is known to be extremely adaptable, thriving in almost any indoor environment. As an air purifying plant, the Euonymus promotes better air quality as well as decorates any room in your home as a vine weaving around a whimisical trellis or as an eye-catching, asymmetrical shrub with multitonal leaves.

How to care for your Euonymus

Use these instructions to care for an Euonymus. This guide will tell you how to water an Euonymus; its light, temperature, humidity preferences and any additional care it might need to help it grow.

Euonymus

LIGHT

Your Euonymus plant will love bright, indirect to sunlight, although some outdoor varieties grow well in full sun.  Avoid placing it in direct sunlight as this may cause the leaves to burn and turn white. A spot near an east or south-facing window would be ideal, or you can place a grow light close to (but not right over) your plant.

WATER

Your Euonymus Plant likes moist soil but can tolerate periods without water as long as the soil doesn’t completely dry out. In fact,  you can water your plant when the top inch or two of the soil volume is dry. Water thoroughly until you see it flow out of the drainage hole. Discard any excess water to avoid root rot. Your euonymus needs less water during the winter dormant season.

HUMIDITY

The leathery leaves of the euonymus plant can adapt to dry air, making it a great houseplant. However, your plant won’t mind added humidity especially in the winter months when you have your heater running. So a light mist might make the leaves happy, but steer clear of wetting them too much or saturating the soil.

TEMPERATURE

Euonymus Plants thrive in average household temperatures and even in warmer environments up to 80℉. Just be careful to keep your plant away from drafts and vents.

FOOD

During the spring and summer, you can feed your Euonymus Plant with a well-balanced fertilizer once a month. An ideal fertilizer has a 20-20-20 ratio diluted at half strength. Avoid fertilizing during the winter.

TOXICITY

The euonymus plant is toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

ADDITIONAL CARE

Once the blooms begin to wilt and die off in the fall and winter, you can prune them to maintain a nice shape. The Euonymus will need trimming from time to time. This should keep them full of leaves instead of looking leggy.

What's an Euonymus?

Botanical Classification: Euonymus spp.

About

The euonymus originated from the East Asian region—primarily the countries of Japan, China, and Korea. There are many varieties of the euonymus plant, with some varieties able to grow 4-8” every year in the right conditions. They are great at adapting to different home environments and are not fussy about getting a bit chilly. This makes them one of the best houseplants for beginner indoor plant parents.

Euonymus produces green and white flowers that bloom in the late spring or the early summer. The blooms are tiny and can blend in amongst the glossy green foliage, so you might not spot them at first. Once these blooms begin to wilt and die off in the fall and winter, you can prune them to maintain a nice shape. The Euonymus will need trimming from time to time. This should keep them full of leaves instead of looking leggy.

Fun Fact

The euonymus is propagated easily with stem cuttings during periods of active growth. Cut a green stem off of the Euonymus plant with sharp, clean scissors. Remove the leaves from the bottom half and stick in damp soil, placing it out of direct sunlight so roots can form.
